Why families check house help before day one
- Court cases from public records across India, pending and disposed, show up even when the agency or the neighbour who referred the help never mentioned them.
- You need only the name, father's or husband's name and city, details most families already have from the agency form or the first conversation.
- The worker is never contacted or told, so an honest person is not embarrassed and the check stays private.
- The report is ready in about 5 minutes, so you can read it before the trial starts instead of waiting weeks.
- It costs ₹99, is saved in My Reports and can be shared with the family members who help you decide.
- A nanny joining a home with a baby or young children
- An attendant who will care for an elderly parent and handle medicines
- Live-in help who will hold a set of house keys
- A cook or maid sent by a placement agency you have not used before
- Help recommended by a neighbour's maid or building staff, with no previous employer to call
- Someone who can start tomorrow, long before police verification can be completed
- 1
Choose the route: agency or personal reference
With an agency, get its office address, fee, replacement policy and trial period in writing, and ask to read the verification it says it has done. With help referred by a neighbour or relative, remember that a recommendation is not the same as a previous employer.
- 2
Call a previous employer yourself
Ask how long they worked there, what the duties were, why they left, whether anything went missing and whether the household would take them back. For a nanny or elder-care attendant, ask how they handled a sick child, a fall or a medical emergency.
- 3
Collect copies of documents, never originals
Take copies of photo ID such as Aadhaar, current and native address, two photographs and a family contact you have called once. You can confirm an Aadhaar card is genuine by scanning its secure QR code with UIDAI's Aadhaar QR scanner app.
- 4
Apply for domestic help police verification
Many city police departments run a verification process for domestic help; Delhi Police, for example, takes registrations through its citizen services portal. Check your city police website or local station, submit the form early and keep the acknowledgement number.
- 5
Run a fraudcheck.ai background check
While police verification is in progress, check public court records across India, news mentions and public profiles using the name, father's or husband's name and city. A match is a reason to ask calm questions, not to assume the worst.
- 6
Treat the first weeks as a supervised trial
Lock away cash, jewellery and documents before day one, and have a family member home for part of each day. If you use CCTV, say so openly and never place cameras where the worker changes or rests. Never share OTPs, PINs or card details, and teach elderly parents the same.
- 7
Put fair terms in writing
On one page, in a language the worker reads, write the pay and payment date, hours, weekly off, leave, duties and notice period, and hand over a signed copy. Paying by bank transfer or UPI keeps a record for both of you.
- Full name and father's or husband's name as on the ID, for the background check and the police form
- A copy of photo ID such as Aadhaar, to confirm identity; let the worker keep the original
- Current address in the city and native address, which police verification asks for
- Two recent photographs, for your records and the police form
- A family or emergency contact, called once so you know the number works
- Names and numbers of previous employers, so you can speak to them directly
- For nannies and attendants, any training or nursing certificate, confirmed with the institute that issued it
- Proof of age, because employing a child below 14 as domestic help is prohibited by law
- Stories about past jobs, family or native place that change each time you ask
- Reluctance to share an address or a phone number that actually works
- A request for a large advance within days of joining
- An agency that calls the worker 'verified' but cannot show you a single document
- Unexplained visitors at the gate, or calls about money during working hours
- Unusual interest in where cash, jewellery or cards are kept
- A child who turns withdrawn or fearful around the carer, or an elderly parent being discouraged from calling family
