Pre-Marriage Background Check Before You Say Yes
A proposal looks promising, and you want to be sure without seeming suspicious. This check shows court cases across India, news mentions and public profiles for the person, using only their name, father's name and city. It is discreet, takes about 5 minutes, and works best alongside meeting the family and talking openly.

Why families add a public-record check
- Court records are public, but eCourts makes you pick a state, district and court complex for each search. This report looks across India at once.
- Published news stories that name the person can bring up anything publicly reported that a biodata or a conversation would not.
- Public social profiles help you see whether the work, city and life described to you match what is publicly visible.
- Discreet by design: no documents or OTP are needed from the person, and they are never contacted or told.
- ₹99, about 5 minutes, and saved in My Reports so parents and siblings can read the same report.
- A match from a matrimony site or app that is starting to feel serious
- A proposal through a cousin, colleague or family friend, known to you through just one person
- A proposal from someone settled abroad whose daily life you cannot easily see
- The weeks before engagement plans, bookings or invitations are made
- Both families agreeing to run the same simple checks on each other
- A match who has been married before, where both sides want the facts clear
- 1
Meet the family more than once, ideally at home
One formal meeting shows everyone at their best. Notice whether details about where they live, what the parents do and where siblings are settled stay consistent; one slip is usually innocent, a pattern deserves a gentle question.
- 2
Talk about work and study, then ask to see papers
Someone in a real job can describe their team, office and typical day easily. For more comfort, ask to see an offer letter, company ID or degree certificate they choose to share, and avoid calling their HR behind their back.
- 3
Raise checks early and make them mutual
Bring it up before engagement plans, and offer the same checks and documents from your side first. Talk about your process, not their honesty: 'We follow the same steps for every proposal.'
- 4
Ask consent for anything private
Credit reports, income, health and divorce papers should come from the person, with their agreement. Only they can download their credit report, and the RBI requires credit bureaus to give individuals one free full report each calendar year.
- 5
Check public court records and news
Run a fraudcheck.ai report with the person's full name, father's name and city. For someone living abroad, use their Indian home city, and remember the report does not cover courts outside India.
- 6
Read any result fairly, then talk
Confirm it is the same person, then look at their role in the case and whether it is pending or disposed. Family property disputes often involve the whole extended family. Ask calmly, and consult a lawyer if unsure.
- 7
For a match abroad, follow the MEA's checklist
The Ministry of External Affairs advises confirming marital status, job, visa type, address abroad and family background, and not finalising over phone or email alone. Register the marriage in India before either of you leaves the country.
- Full name, father's name and home city, for the public-record check
- An offer letter, appointment letter or company ID, to see that the job described is real
- Degree or diploma certificates for the qualifications mentioned in the biodata
- The divorce decree, if the person has been married before, so their status is clear
- Their own free credit report, only if finances matter to your family and they agree to share it
- For a match abroad: passport, current visa or residence permit, and proof of address there
- For a match abroad: recent tax returns, which the MEA suggests to show where they have lived and worked
- Any request for money from a match you have not met, whether for a gift held at customs, a medical bill, a visa fee or wedding costs
- A match who steers the conversation towards a trading, forex or crypto app they say has made them money
- Repeated excuses to avoid a live video call, or profile photos that look like stock or model pictures
- Unwillingness to let you speak to parents, siblings or friends, or a request to keep things from your family
- Talk of marriage within days, with pressure to fix the date and impatience at any delay
- Refusing to share any document while asking to see yours
- Details about work, education or past relationships that keep shifting
